Finding the right wetsuit size always raises the same questions. Here's our advice for choosing without second-guessing yourself.

1. To stay warmer

Priority number one: protecting you from the cold. The wetsuit traps a thin film of water between your skin and the neoprene; that water warms up against your body and keeps you warm. Hence the importance of a precise fit. For low temperatures, go for a fullsuit.

2. To be comfortable

You need to feel at ease to stay in the water for long. A wetsuit in your size acts like a second skin and prevents chafing, which is usually caused by creases.

3. To save time

Getting your wetsuit on and off shouldn't be a struggle. In the right size, and with a bit of practice, you'll save time before and after the session. Choose an entry system that's easy to handle too.

4. To make your wetsuit last longer

A wetsuit that's too small strains the elasticity of the neoprene and shortens its life. In the right size and properly cared for, it will last considerably longer.

WHICH THICKNESS FOR WHICH WATER TEMPERATURE?

Thickness also influences the size you should pick: the thicker the suit, the less flexible it is. If you're hesitating between two sizes, factor this in.

You could easily be an M in 3/2 mm and an L in 5/4 mm.

CHOOSING YOUR WETSUIT SIZE IN STORE

Let's be honest: trying one on is nobody's idea of fun. Plenty of us have sweated it out in a small changing room.

Feeling compressed when you pull on a dry wetsuit is normal, especially in thicker neoprene: it softens on contact with water. Conversely, a suit that's too big will crease, cause chafing and let water in.

One warning: the most pleasant suit in the shop, the one that slips on most easily, isn't necessarily the best. Very soft models are often not very warm and age quickly.
